Peter Chester gave a talk at WordCamp Los Angeles in mid September this year, where he covered some of the basics of scaling multi-site WordPress based on his own experience with over 170 radio stations. He summarized the above checklist as “the ability to manage growth.”
In his presentation Peter walks through architecture, caching and project management as well as some interesting questions and answers from the attendees. Peter’s got some great tips definitely worth keeping in mind (together with the above quote) if you’re working on a project that needs to be scaled at some point.
Peter also points out that most of the WordPress plugins out there are not ready for scaling out of the box and could easily become bottlenecks in large-scale web applications. Watch the full video if you have time, we’re pretty sure there’s a lot of stuff to learn.
